Sayuri Miyashita's first solo exhibition at TALION GALLERY comprises new drawings of the series Tableau as Stage, which has been continuously produced since 2009. By minute hatching of pencil on paper or board, Miyashita draws a figure of a hand shadow picture dropped on a table. These two motifs, shadow and table, are both in close relation to the origin of picture: the derivation of a word "table" is the same as that of "tableau" and the shadow takes a role in the myth of the origin of the picture. These allusive figures come with the accurate method of the drawing and visualize the threshold of representation.

Artist's Statement
"To see a picture is an experience of catching a glimpse of the actuality of image, which often slips from your recognition like a spirit. The hand shadow birds are not actual birds but something unsubstantial that seems like birds. We can recognize image only by negative language ("something that is not…, nor …") that comes out of positive language. In other words, image is always something negative just like a shadow. By drawing a picture of a hand shadow picture created by others on a table, I aim to disclose the fact that the picture is actually something drawn by an artist. Image in the drawings shows not a spirit that seemingly exists in front of the spectators but a sprit itself that does not exist in the actual world."
